As the oldest class in the Lower School, Fifth grade has the special role of supporting a smooth transition from elementary to middle school. Socially, emotionally, and academically, fifth graders are preparing themselves for this important change and are gaining independence in a safe and supportive learning environment that invites personal growth.
Through a highly integrated study of ancient Greece, students learn about classical cultures and their profound influence on our own. Steeped in Greek mythology, students learn to apply critical thinking skills to their reading of D’Aulaires’ Book of Greek Myths and later to class novels. Modeling their writing after Greek myths, students create their own pieces, incorporating a number of important mythological elements. For instructional and assessment purposes in Writing, we use The Six Traits of Writing, supplemented by Empowering Writers.
For Social Studies students research an aspect of life in ancient Greece and share their knowledge with the class, not only through a formal paper with bibliography but also through a presentation to the class in a medium that showcases their talents best, from cooking a meal to sharing a dance or creating a red-on-black pot. In the spring, the focus shifts from Greece to ancient Rome with an introduction to that culture and to the Latin roots of the English language. Students conduct formal research on ancient Rome and draw upon their knowledge to re-create the Roman Forum, a bustling and interactive living museum. Everyone is engaged and everyone meets with success.
In addition to Reading, Writing, and Social Studies, students enhance their vocabulary and spelling skills through the use of Wordly Wise. They also continue following the research-based program, Everyday Math. We incorporate the practice of math skills into a spiral curriculum, which introduces new concepts while reinforcing earlier ones. Furthermore, students sharpen their problem-solving skills with a weekly “Mind Bender” that stimulates both creative thinking and discussion. The fifth grade curriculum is enhanced by a variety of Specials, such as Spanish, Science, Music, PE and Art.
With all the opportunities for personal exploration in fifth grade, students also develop key study skills to organize their work and budget their time. Initial assignments are relatively circumscribed but grow over the year into long-term projects that stretch students’ critical thinking and organizational abilities. These and the high standards of the grade level prepare them well for the rigors of Middle School, where they will continue to experience the joy of learning as they are challenged to achieve their personal best.
