Lower School Spanish

Bienvenidos to Spanish at IDS. Our goal is to ensure that our students experience the benefits of learning a second language by achieving language proficiency in Spanish. Our program offers a variety of developmentally appropriate materials, technology and strategies that enable students to meet grade level objectives and goals. Lessons integrate language with culture, which leads students to thoughtful observations of Hispanic cultures and reflections on their own. IDS students seek out opportunities to communicate in Spanish throughout the day, in their community, and in the global community that awaits them in the 21st century.

In Lower School, grades 2-5, we are ready for more intensive Spanish language instruction. Through various activities and direct instruction, we expand vocabulary and introduce grammar appropriate for the age level. These tools make us more agile and accurate users of the language while preparing us for the more complex challenges ahead. We enjoy many hands-on activities, too, that enhance our developing language skills and enrich our experience and understanding of other cultures. For example, we produce a fashion show as we learn about clothing. We prepare various ethnic recipes for a potluck feast as we appreciate other foods. And we create family trees as part of our family theme.
