From the Desk of the President

                                  2011-2012

Christopher M.

This year, after proposing and implementing a Student Government into our school, I was elected as President. However, I would like to stress, as I have stressed throughout these pages, that it is not significant who was elected to be part of the Student Government. For in reality, we are all members of the Student Government. Your input and suggestions are integral in our success.

Last May, I proposed a Student Government. A Student Government would develop a way for students to express their ideas and improvements in an organized fashion. It would not be a competitive spirit or rivalry that would motivate one to run for Student Government, but instead students would be motivated to run because he or she has the desire to change and make improvements to the school around them; the will to make the community a better place. Looking back at the process I undertook: inquiring to school across Connecticut regarding their student governments, hurried meetings, and writing the Constitution, I now realize that regardless of the challenges at hand, we can make a difference through our actions. Each and every one of you has the opportunity to make a difference in your community. Regardless of how old you are of how young you are, you can make differences in the world you live in.

What started as a small thought almost 9 months ago has greatly evolved into a working machine of our school. If you did not witness it yourself, several months ago, the halls were filled with posters, screaming slogans promising to make the best improvements to the school. Students were campaigning in the halls, describing the plethora of improvements that each would make. It was a wonderful sit to behold. Though it is not significant who was elected as in theory we are all members of the Student Government, I was elected President, along with Chase S. as Vice President, and Luke B. as Secretary. Camille M. and Thomas H. were elected as eighth grade representatives, Nora G-F. and Leander V. as seventh grade representatives, and David M. and Lawrence H. as sixth grade representatives. Each and every member of the Student Government represents the entire school from the most rambunctious 8thgrader to the most timid beginner. Whether you did not get elected or did not choose to run, you all have the ability to make improvements to the school. Each student has the ability to propose ideas, offer their input, and attend meetings open to the entire community. You can talk to your Class Representatives who will be more than willing to bring up your idea at the next student government meting.

After writing to Richard Blumenthal, regarding leadership necessary in a student government, he wrote back a very powerful letter regarding our duties as part of the Student Government. I feel that it is a necessity to share a part of this letter.

“Throughout my life as a public servant, I have found listening to be a skill critical to effective leadership. Whether running for office, meeting with constituents, or discussing policy and legislation with my colleagues, I believe that it is always critical to keep an open mind and work collaboratively with others to achieve the best results for Connecticut and the nation. As you all serve on your student council, always remember to listen to your fellow students, teachers, your principal, and other administrators. As you move forward with this endeavor, keep everyone’s views in mind, work to build consensus, and treat others with respect. I have no doubt you will find success and I wish you the best. “

This letter truly captures the essence of our Student Government. In many of our future endeavors, we will listen to each and every student for their input. It is necessary to remember that regardless of how fast we are walking or how busy we may look talking with another student, do not hesitate to describe to us an idea or suggestion. For only with your help and suggestions, will we be able to make improvements to the school.
