Middle School Teacher: Algebra (Grade 8) Digital Arts (Grades 6, 7, 8)

The Independent Day School in Middlefield, CT is seeking an experienced mathematics teacher for the Middle School. The full-time teacher will teach two sections of 8th grade Algebra and of Digital Arts (Grades 3-5: 1X per week, Grades 6 – 8: 2X per week).

The successful candidate will challenge and inspire students to be fearless learners, and will be part of a close-knit teaching and learning community.  A high degree of teamwork, collaboration, and communication are a must; a sense of humor is appreciated.  IDS values highly initiative, creativity, and flexibility.

Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree or higher in education or a related field
    • Successful mathematics teaching experience
    • Exceptional technology skills
    • Thorough knowledge of math pedagogy and the use of technology in the mathematics classroom
    • Excellent oral, written, and presentational skills
    • Proficiency with classroom technology
    • Independent school experience preferred
    • Ability to work as a team member

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  1. Promote a positive classroom environment and demonstrate strong classroom management skills in order to create and maintain a learning environment that ensures high levels of learning for all students.
  2. Effectively plan and implement creative, high quality, developmentally appropriate Algebra and Digital Arts curriculum and instruction that encourages students to be actively engaged in the learning process and results in high-end learning for all students.
  3. Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of a wide variety of students with different learning styles as well as different areas of strength and weakness. Incorporate individualized instructional accommodations as directed.
  4. Utilize assessment and evaluations to guide instructional decisions; maintain accurate, up-to-date records and communicate results to students, parents, and appropriate others in a timely manner with regard to student progress and performance.
  5. Collaborate, coordinate, and communicate with students, parents, colleagues, and administrators to ensure the highest level of learning for all students.
  6. Serve as a Middle School advisor and complete all activities and assignments related to this role.
  7. Communicate the progress and growth of a student in narrative form, using language that is clear and thoughtful, and follows common grammatical expectations. 
  8. Work diligently and promptly to maintain positive and productive home-school communication and strong working relationships with parents.
  9. Perform professional duties efficiently, manage resources effectively, and meet deadlines set by the school.
  10. Participate in and support the school’s admissions, development and community events and fulfill expectations for participation in school activities beyond the classroom.  
  11. Invest in one’s own professional learning and demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement of teaching practice. 
  12. Participate as an active, engaged member of the whole school community, reaching across classroom and divisional boundaries to create an enriching, exceptional, synchronized school experience for IDS students.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned. These duties include, but are not limited to, student advising, recess duty, lunch duty, dismissal duty, weekend and evening events, chaperone duty, student supervision, service projects, schoolwide events, etc.

Salary commensurate with experience. Generous benefits package includes health, dental, HSA, 403b.

Middle School English/Language Arts Teacher (Grades 6, 7, 8)

The Independent Day School in Middlefield, CT (link) is seeking an experienced English/Language Arts/Theatre teacher for the Middle School. The teacher will teach three sections of Middle School English/Language Arts, emphasizing reading, writing, and literature, and semester-long courses in theatre to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders, as well as fulfill Middle School theatre duties such as producing and directing plays.

The successful candidate will challenge and inspire students to be fearless learners, and will be part of a close-knit teaching and learning community.  A high degree of teamwork, collaboration, and communication are a must; a sense of humor is appreciated.  IDS values highly initiative, creativity, and flexibility.

 

Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree or higher in the education or a related field
    • A minimum of 3 years of successful English/Language Arts teaching experience, preferably in Middle School.
    • Independent school experience preferred
    • Thorough knowledge of English/Language Arts pedagogy
    • Excellent oral, written, and presentational skills
    • Proficiency with classroom technology
    • Ability to work as a team member
