Our Learning Spaces
Classrooms, Innovation Lab, Theater, and so much more!
Whelen Innovation Lab
The Whelen Innovation Lab was dedicated in October 2024. Funded through a generous donation from the Whelen Engineering Company and the 2024 Call to the Heart donors, this new learning space strengthens the STEM program. Upper School students take an Innovation lab course and all other students have an opportunity to go to the lab twice a week to use 3D printers and a variety of robots. Students also do video and sound editing in the lab.
Madeline Smith Art Studio
With special thanks to the 2025 Call to the Heart donors, the Art Studio was completely renovated during the summer of 2025. It was dedicated as the Madeline Smith Art Studio in honor of long-time Art teacher, Madeline Smith. This renovated space provides a bright, artistic space for our “Fearless Artists”.
Woodshop
Formerly known as the Maker Lab, the IDS Woodshop provides our Upper School students opportunity to show their creative spirit, much like they do in Innovation Lab. Students have access to a variety of tools including a drill press and a miter saw to make wood-related products such as bird houses, small benches, and signage to mark access and egress points on our nature trail. Upper School students take Woodshop as part of a Quarter elective class.
Galluzo Theater
In 2005, Building C, otherwise known as the Galluzzo Theater, opened its doors at IDS. The beautiful carved wooden tiles that line the walls and ceilings are from Costa Rica. The Theater is used for a variety of learning activities, such as weekly All School Meetings, concerts, grade level plays, and our annual school musical. The Theater is also used for after school programs and is available for rent to outside groups.
Music Rehearsal Spaces
The Lower Galluzzo, directly below the Theater, has three distinct classroom spaces. The two smaller classrooms are used for music instruction. The largest of the three classrooms is used as a multipurpose space for events, large group instructional activities, and as a lunch room for Grades 3-8.
Community Center
The Community Center, once known as the Hall of Flags, is another multipurpose space used for Upper School Quarters Block classes such as Transitions and Mock Trial, weekly faculty meetings, and small event gatherings.
Instructional Square Footage
The total amount of instructional indoor space on the IDS campus is 32,328 square feet.
